Our Kitchen: Planning Phase

When Ty and I bought our first home we knew that updating the kitchen would be high on our to do list... Thankfully, all we really need/want to do is paint the cabinets and add hardware to them. Ideally we'd love to replace the countertops but that's not as high on the list.

I originally thought we'd hire someone to paint the cabinets, but Ty has done several projects around the house that are much more difficult than painting cabinets... So, here we go, diving head first into a huge project that we will most likely wonder what in the world were we thinking... BUT.. It's fun working on your house together and there's nothing like accomplishing a big project DIY style...

First up, let me show you what our kitchen currently looks like...

(view from the living room)

There's really nothing wrong with it at all.. and, in fact, some people may prefer the oak/orange color but I have always wanted white cabinets.. always. The cabinets are in great shape. I really don't even dislike the countertops. I'd rather have granite but I think the light countertops and the white cabinets would look perfectly fine together.

Here are a few more pictures of our kitchen...

(our eat-in area of the kitchen)

Now for the inspiration pictures.. I tried to find pictures of kitchens that seemed similar to ours...

I love this kitchen tutorial.. It's a great one and I learned a lot of good information from this site.

I love the open cabinet concept... I think I want to leave a few cabinets open...

The cabinets labeled 1, 2 and 3 are the cabinets I'd like to leave the doors off.

I went to Lowe's yesterday and talked to one of the painter guys who offered up a TON of tips and ideas that encouraged me to tackle this project. He suggested that we use this instead of sanding the cabinets...

I've used this when I painted an end table, but I've never used it on such a large project like kitchen cabinets. Have any of you ever used this? Do we sand or use the deglosser? We have a sander so that's no problem to sand instead if we needed to.

I also found this hardware that I think would look amazing on the white cabinets. We kind of have a rustic feel going on in our eat-in kitchen and I think these knobs would look so cool and unexpected...

I love all of the options in the set except I wouldn't use the drop down pull for the kitchen.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has painted kitchen cabinets or has any tips to offer! What do you think of the ideas we have so far? I'd love to know!

Rosemary Recap: Part II

Where to stay? You cannot go wrong in Rosemary Beach. Rosemary mainly consists of houses, carriage houses (these are smaller), and apartment like condos. Everything we have seen is very nice. We've stayed in a house, carriage house and two different condos... They all were fabby!

Where to eat? We always eat breakfast and lunch in the house... We buy groceries and find it makes things much simpler. We make it easy too... cereal, sandwiches, chips/dips, etc. This way everyone can eat when they get hungry and it's fast which is nice because we don't want to miss any beach time! For dinners we usually go out or get take out. BUT.. we go a little later than usual. We do not want to miss sunset so this puts us eating around 9 pm... My favorite place to eat in Rosemary is Cowgirl Kitchen.

What to do? I'm really not kidding when I say we go to the beach everyday, all day. We get the beach service chairs which is something I highly recommend... It may seem pricey, but we LOVE having the chairs set up for us each day plus an umbrella- you just can't sit in the sun all day, all week.. we love having the shade of the umbrellas!

There are other things to do in Rosie too... Rent bikes, kayak, shop, get ice cream..... It's just the sweetest little place.

What are your favorite places to vacation and what do you like to do there?

Rosemary Recap: Part I

Today I'm linking up with Sami from Sami's Shenanigans for a weekend/vacay recap!

Sami's Shenanigans

Good morning, sweet readers! It feels great to be home, settling back into routine and writing on my blog. I never realize how much I've missed my home until I am back in it... there really is nothing like home. I also missed my sweet puppy so much.. He was so excited to see mommy and daddy.

Ty and I spent the majority of our weekend in the car.. 22 hours to be exact. Yes, 22 hours! Are we crazy? I really think so. What should have been a 12 hour car trip turned into 18 hours.. I thought I would lose my sanity but I survived and that's a story for another day.

Instead of just a weekend recap, I thought I'd share part one of our vacation recap this morning. I cannot even tell you how much I loved, loved, loved our trip to Rosemary Beach, FL this summer. I know I've talked about this trip so much lately but it just is one of the best weeks for us.

Something about being at the beach makes me feel closer to God.. the ocean is so big and so powerful and it makes me feel so small.. in a good way. I love the reminder of how microscopic I am in comparison to the world... and how BIG our God is. The ocean also makes me reflect on what I've accomplished so far in life and causes me to think about where I want to be in the future... It's almost like I find myself at the beach each year.. Does anyone else feel the same way or am I crazy? Maybe it was that long car ride...

Anyways, I got to start my trip with this...

This would be a gift basket from my wonderful mom. She put these baskets together for us girls and it was the sweetest thing ever. She is the most thoughtful person ever and we LOVE her girly baskets! :)

We spent our days laying in the sun, eating yummy food, sipping pina colodas, watching the sunset and playing with my adorable first cousin who I love dearly...

Tell me, what would you like to know about Rosemary Beach/30-A in FL?

Have a happy Monday! Come back tomorrow for Part II.

Checking In

Happy Friday!
What a week we have had... Beautiful days at the beach, delicious dinners and drinks, family time and simply relaxing all day long. Is there anything better than a week at the beach? I don't think so!

I had intended to post this week but that didn't happen. I will be back Monday with vacation recaps and a lot of pictures to show you all... I cannot wait...

For now, here's a picture of the moon on the water from this week.

Follow me HERE on Instagram to see more pictures from our trip.

Have a happy weekend and check back Monday for more vacation tidbits!

SUYL - Freezer Meals

Today I'm linking up with Kelly's Korner for Show Us Your Life... This week is all about Freezer Meals.

I love, love, love freezer cooking. About a year ago, one of my best friends and I got really into freezer cooking. Every 6 weeks or so we would get together and cook all day long. We learned a lot of good techniques/recipes from doing this. Life got busy and we haven't had a freezer day in probably about a year... BUT.. life is so much simpler if you keep your freezer stocked with a few things.

I think one of my favorite freezer ideas is simply cooking up meats. I would cook several pounds of ground beef and portion it into one pound servings (most recipes call for 1 lb.). This makes cooking so much faster if your meat is already cooked and it cuts down on dirty dishes.. just thaw your meat during the day and when you get home you can throw together your dinner.

I also liked to keep taco meat prepared in the freezer. Simply cook your ground beef like normal, add in taco seasoning, salsa and anything else that sounds good (black beans, green chilies, etc). When you have your meat finished, portion into 1 lb. servings. This makes for a super easy night... thaw your taco meat, grab some tortillas and make this guac!

Chicken is another great meat to freeze. I would either boil or bake chicken breast and shred  for casseroles, enchiladas, etc. I usually shredded about 3-4 breast and bagged them up to freeze. Tip: Pour a little bit of the chicken broth into the freezer bag of chicken and it will stay moist.

My next favorite thing to freeze is twice baked potatoes. I used this website for the twice baked potatoes and also tips for cooking meats. We baked our potatoes while cooking other meals and that saves time. When the potatoes are done, simply scoop the inside of the potato out and place in a large bowl. Once all potatoes are scooped, add in sour cream, cream cheese, butter, cheddar cheese ad mix. Fill each potato with the filing and wrap in saran wrap. I always stuck mine right into the oven frozen and baked them on 350 for about 20 minutes or so until they are warm.

A few of my favorite recipes that we cooked are MEAT LOAF MINI'S (which go great with a twice baked potato that I mentioned above), BLUEBERRY MUFFINS, Chili (just use your favorite chili recipe and freeze in containers) and CHICKEN ENCHILADA SOUP (just about any soup will freeze great).

One of the best things I learned was that SO many of my favorite recipes that I use regularly could be frozen.  Casseroles, soups, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chili, twice baked potatoes, muffins, etc.... All of that can be frozen.

I recommend this cookbook...

THIS website is a life saver!! It tells you how long you can store things in the freezer (it also tells you how long for the fridge as well). I have referred to this site many times.. Be sure and label your freezer meals/meats with the date.

I think that is about everything I know when it comes to freezer cooking.. Be sure and link up with Kelly at Kelly's Korner to share your favorite freezer recipes!

Have a great weekend!!

MAXI

Today has been filled with errands and last minute packing for our trip to Florida.
I ran into Old Navy to grab my Hubs a fedora for the beach (with no intentions of buying myself anything..none at all). BUT... I decided I would take a breeze through clothes and I was pleasantly surprised to find a maxi that I adore...

it's a little blurry, sorry!

I love the fit of this dress which is not usually the case for Old Navy dresses on me.. It's slim all the way down without being too fitted and it comes in five other patterns. I plan on wearing mine with nude sandals... possibly even nude flip flops for an ultra casual look at the beach.

I also see it it with my cropped, light denim jacket for a monochromatic look in early fall...

Grab yourself one of these maxi dresses before they are all gone!

How I Make My House Smell Good

I've seen a couple of different bloggers post about their favorite things and I always LOVE those posts. I love to see people's favorite make-up products, hair products, shoes, candles, food... anything.. I just love to see the stuff that people buy and use. I have found a lot of new things by reading blogs and trying what other people swear by.

Today I'm going to tell you about my favorite candles! Candles/Scentsy's are definitely the way I make and keep my house smelling nice. I'm always bumfuzzled (is that a word?) when I go into people's houses and they do not use candles. HELLO! Please start using candles. I love to walk into a room and smell something delicious and it just makes your house SO much cozier.

I'm NOT picky about the candles I use (I'll use any kind) but I do have a few kinds that I stick to when I'm the one buying the candle. I also have a Scentsy and I love it.. If you do not have a Scentsy.. you need one. I'll share my favorite waxes to buy for your Scentsy today too..

Swan Creek Candles

I love, love, love Swan Creek Candles. They have the most delicious smells and gorgeous containers. They are pricey but so worth it. My favorite scents to buy are Hazelnut, Coconut Lime and Cilantro Clementine.

 Bath and Body Works Candles

Bath and Body Works candles are the candles I buy most frequently. I buy about 4 of these at each season change. This summer I bought Lemon Mint Leaf and it is my FAVORITE. I'm so sad because I haven't been able to find it in store since.. But, do not fear... I have a lot of other good summer scents for you to try: Meet Me In Tahiti, Coconut Lime Verbena and Island Colada.

Scentsy

Now, onto Scentsy... I love Scentsy.. They look adorable in your house and their scents smell delicious! My Dad and Tina recently got me a new Scentsy pot for my classroom..

Look how adorable! It just makes my heart happy and I cannot wait to use it in my classroom this year.

My favorite Scentsy waxes are Serene Green, Mochadoodle, Cherry Limeade, Rio Beach and so many more! If you're looking for a manly scent... get Weathered Leather.. Smells great!

Well... now you know my favorite candles and scentsy waxes. I get giddy when it's time to buy new candles or waxes. It's just fun and there's nothing better than a house that smells good. I love for people to walk in our house and notice that it smells good... It's just fun. Tell me, what ways do you keep your house smelling good? I'd love to hear from you!

Have a happy day!!

In the bag...

My Beach Bag

My Beach Bag by darianblair featuring a transparent beach bag

As a celebration of going to the beach next week, I thought it would be fun to show you what I plan to carry...

1. Beach towel
2. Sunglasses
3. Small, clear cosmetic bag- I like to always have one of these in my beach bag. I store my phone, headphones, wallet, chap-stick and any keys that I have. I like to have a dry, safe spot for these important items.
4. Magazines (my favorites: Us Weekly, People, Cosmo, In Style.. anything really)
5. Flip Flops and a Fedora/Beach Hat
6. Lip Balm with an SPF
7. Extra Hair Ties
8. Water bottle that you can fill up each morning and take in your bag
9. Cover up
10. Nook and Headphones
11. Beach Spray for your hair... This is great to spritz in your hair after you swim for some added texture and waves while you bake in the sun!

What do you take with you to the beach or pool?

Have a happy Wednesday!!

Beach Essentials

Beach Essentials

*click on the links above to see where I found each item*

No matter where I go on a trip... I always over pack. Always. I do a little better when I make some kind of list to keep me focused on what I really want to bring. Since Tyler and I will be leaving for the beach in a few days, I decided to create some inspiration for myself and share it with all of you!

I didn't number all of the items because that would have been just a crazy amount of numbers, but I will still discuss some of the items pictured above! Several of these items I actually own and a few of them simply represent the type of clothing I will be bringing... make sense? :)

Tops: I chose four different tops listed above. A white and black tank, cute tee and a patterned tank... These kind of tops can be mixed and matched very easily. Mixing and matching is very important because you can create a lot of different outfits without bringing too terribly much. For instance: The white/black tanks can go with any of the bottoms and the skull tank will go with the black maxi and the denim.

Another for instance: Pair the black tank with the denim cut offs, wedges and fedora. The wedges and fedora add a fun element to the outfit vs. simple and plain.

Bottoms: I chose four different options: denim cutoffs, boyfriend jeans, black maxi skirt and a tie-dye maxi skirt. All of these options are comfortable and SO versatile. I will also add in a white and colored pair of shorts to my suitcase.. This will give even more options.

Shoes: I'm going to try my VERY hardest to not bring 1,289 pairs of shoes. It would be GREAT if I could really only bring 3 pairs.. but, I'm not making any promises. I will for sure be bringing the wedges pictured above, a cute pair of flat sandals and of course..flip flops.

Accessories: I love a good, neutral fedora, aviators and a gold necklace. You can pair those three things with ANY outfit and it instantly takes your outfit from good to great! I also plan on throwing in a couple of bracelets for staking.

Swimsuit/Cover-Up: My sweet aunt got me an L-Space fringe swimsuit this season and I'm IN LOVE. My favorite swimsuit ever... You cannot go wrong with a fringe two-piece... you just cannot. I love the black romper cover-up. It'd be easy to get into and could also double as a going out to eat outfit with those wedges... versatile.

Undergarments: I'm all about lacy undergarments right now. I love this pink lacy bralette from Victoria's Secret. I have the same one in a bright coral and the colors are FABBY. Think about it... You can add a lacy bralette under any solid or patterned tank and it adds so much to your outfit... A lacy bralette is adorbs peeking out from under your favorite t's and tanks. Another plus... comfy!

Beach Bag: I plan on doing a separate post about packing your beach bag but I thought I would still throw it in on beach essentials because you CANNOT go to the beach without a cute beach tote. Of course, you must take sunscreen in your beach bag.. everything else that goes in there... will be discussed tomorrow!

I tell you what.. Creating a list of beach essentials is hard for someone who naturally wants to bring her whole closet to the beach. I think this board will help me when I pack and remind me that a few good basics mixed with fun options will allow me to create so many outfits.

Tell me, what do you think of my essentials? What would you put on your list? I'd love to hear from you!

Have a happy Tuesday!

Our Weekend

Ty and I had a great weekend. We relaxed the entire weekend in some way or another.. those are always the best weekends. Friday night I cooked this for dinner and it was great. I think Tyler likes it better than I do but it is definitely tasty!

This is my life every night at bedtime...

He lays as close as he possibly can to my face... it's precious!

Saturday morning we slept in and then headed to the pool at the gym....

We've had gorgeous weather in NWA all weekend.. sunny and warm. The humidity hasn't been terribly high either which is a huge plus!

We went out to eat Saturday night at Johnny Brusco's. We really like their pizza and any night that I don't have to cook is my favorite night!

Side note: I love, love, love fedoras! They are PERFECT for hot days (actually they are perfect for any day). I like to wear my hair in a low, messy bun during the summer months with my fedoras. In the fall/winter I like to wear my hair down and wavy with my fedoras. I've heard so many people say they cannot wear hats and I just want you all to know.. you CAN wear hats. Trust me. Sure, getting used to yourself in a fedora may take a couple of times wearing one but once you do... You will fall in love..over and over again.

Sunday morning we slept in again and got ready for church. We visited a church that we had visited once before a couple of weeks ago and we really enjoyed it again. Hubs and I have slacked the last year on finding a church home... bad hubs and wife. We are back at it though and really enjoying this place we are visiting!

After church I hit up the pool again for the afternoon and we finished off our evening with a snow shake. What's a snow shake you ask? Only the best dessert EVER! If you live in NWA...listen up... There's a snow cone stand near downtown rogers called The Frozen Coconut. They have all of the regular shaved ice and flavors that you're used to, but they also have snow shakes. A snow shake is a snow cone blended with cream and other yummy flavors/ingredients to create the most perfect dessert. Our personal favorites are the Iced Cinnamon Roll, Blackberry Cobbler A La Mode, Snickerdoodle Cookie and Apple Pie A La Mode... See what I mean? Total deliciousness!!

Tonight I tried the Blackberry Cobbler and it is now one of my favorites...

Our weekend was great and the real countdown to our Florida trip begins now... 5 DAYS!

Let me leave you with this...

Have a good week!!

Five on Friday!

Today I'm linking up with the good life blog for 5 on Friday!

ONE

Ty and I leave for the beach in one week. Did you hear that? ONE WEEK! I'm obsessed with the beach. Our beach days go something like this... Wake up about 8 am... Have coffee and a light breakfast and get to the beach about 9 am. We literally stay at the beach until the sun goes down except coming in at lunch for a quick sandwich. LOVE IT!

TWO

Ty and I have tried 3 new recipes this week and we have another new one to try for tonight. Do you ever have those weeks where you cook a lot of new things that you love? Then there are those where everything I cook tastes bad and those weeks where I never seem to get a meal made... Am I the only one?

Recipes from this week: HEREHEREHERE and HERE!

THREE

I've consumed an ungodly amount of the Peach Green Tea Lemonade from Starbucks. I'm talking the TRENTA size... everyday. AND... For the 2nd time yesterday they hand me my drink and I pull away excited that I'm about to consume the most delicious drink ever... only to find out it's plain green tea. Seriously Starbucks!? Get it together. You best believe I pulled right back through that drive thru...

FOUR

I LOVE Blake Shelton's song Boys Round Here... Love it! Randomly in my head I hear, "Chew Tobacco, Chew Tobacco, Chew Tobacco SPIT!"

FIVE

This week I've been dying to go to a pool. Well, the gym I'm a member at has an outdoor pool. I've never seen it, been out there... nothing. So, each day this week I have thought about going, but then I just feel awkward going to a pool alone... Am I the only one? I love to shop alone, get my nails done alone.. I've even been to a restaurant alone to eat... BUT, something about the pool. Alone. It just feels weird. Especially at a gym!? Am I the only one who doesn't want to put on my two piece and head out to a pool alone?

I wish I had this in my backyard... That would solve everything...

Our Story

We celebrated 2 years of marriage in May...

... I know, I know... Two years isn't really all that long to be married. Really, it's such a short amount of time. We don't have kids, nothing crazy has happened to us... just two pretty awesome years of marriage. BUT, you learn a lot about yourself and each other in those normal, everyday situations. I love to think back on the past several years and remember all of the good times we've had. I realized I've never really shared our story on the blog and I know this will be a post I enjoy reading over and over... So, here goes...

This was our first picture together. This was taken in my dorm room my sophomore year of college during the fall of 2009. We are such young pups here (actually, we're still young pups)... I'm 19 and Ty is 21 in this picture. WEIRD! Ty and I met in college while I was a sophomore and he was a senior. We spotted each other at the end of my freshman year and his junior year. I really don't think we thought much about it all summer though. But, when we went back to school in the fall...I was into him and he seemed into me too. We began to always be in the same place. We hung out several different times in large groups and then one time he asked me if he could walk me back to my dorm. I agreed and on that walk he asked for my number. Several days later we went to Starbucks and that's where it all began...

We went to a Banquet together December 2009. This was one of the first bigger things we went to together...We had been dating for about 2 months. I remember being really excited about this night.. This was also the night that Tyler told me he loved me. Funny story: At the banquet, I said something to Tyler.. I don't even remember what it was... BUT, Tyler thought I had told him I loved him. Boyfriend knows I wouldn't say that first, but he still thinks that's what I said... and for the record, I DIDN'T say it first.

This was a picture taken the weekend we got engaged. We got engaged in August of 2010. I was just about to start my junior year of college and Ty had just started his first "grown up" job about 2 hours away from my college. That junior year of college was really hard on me.. I mean, not so hard in retrospect... BUT, at the time it felt torturous. My fiance' was 2 hours away, my mom and family were 2 hours away, I was in a single dorm room... I felt really alone and I was never more excited for a school year to end.

Our wedding day. After 9 months of being engaged, we were WAY excited when our big day arrived. It was perfect. Our families did everything they possibly could to give us our dream wedding... and we got it. I want to do it all over again... I'd love to be able to live through that day over and over again.

We honeymooned in Cancun, Mexico. It was so much fun.. We took Tequila shots like it was our JOB and drank margs like they were water. Oh, the memories... some of which I'll take to my grave! What happens in Cancun... Stays in Cancun. I think we need to go to Cancun again, do you??!!

A couple of weeks after getting home from Cancun.. we brought home this little boy. I mean, does it get any cuter than that?! We've loved our baby Mozart like no other. We've spoiled him rotten and we cannot picture life without him. The three of us... we're as close as you can be.

Here we are... two years later.. loving life, loving each other, working grown up jobs (I'm a 2nd grade teacher and Ty is an electrical designer). We've bought our first home, built a screened in porch, laughed together, cried (I've cried.. Tyler hasn't shed one single tear) together, eaten a TON of Mexican food, drank too much together (margaritas..they get us every time), we've had our ups and downs. There's no one I'd rather go through life with. He has become my rock these past two years. He calms me down and makes me a better person.
Here's to 99 more years together... and A LOT of fun.

love, Darian
